Thousands of expats live in Mallorca, and many prefer English-speaking doctors who can understand their concerns without a language barrier. Fortunately, the island has a good selection of doctors who speak English.
Where to find English-speaking doctors
Most English-speaking doctors practise in Palma de Mallorca and tourist areas like Santa Ponsa, Calvià, Alcúdia and Cala Millor. In rural areas the choice is limited, but nothing on Mallorca is more than 30-40 minutes away.
Specialities with English-speaking doctors
- General practitioners: The most common first stop. Many offer house calls.
- Dentists: Wide range of English-speaking dentists available
- Orthopaedics: Popular with sports enthusiasts and retirees
- Dermatology: Skin care is especially important in Mallorca
- Gynaecology: Several English-speaking practices in Palma
- Psychology: Growing availability in English
Public vs private healthcare
Spain has a dual healthcare system:
- Public (Seguridad Social): Free for residents with social security. Good basic care but long waiting times for specialists. Language: almost exclusively Spanish/Catalan.
- Private: Shorter waits, free choice of doctor, often English-speaking. Cost: from 50-100 euros per consultation without insurance.
