Stalls line the streets around Pla\u00e7a des Mercadal and Pla\u00e7a de la Constituci\u00f3, packed tightly together: fresh local fruits and vegetables, Mallorcan specialties such as sobrassada, sheep\u2019s cheese, olives, almonds, and honey. There\u2019s also leather goods, handmade ceramics, flowers and plants, as well as clothing and bric-a-brac. One special feature makes Sineu unique: the traditional livestock market, one of the last of its kind on Mallorca, where poultry, rabbits, and small animals are still sold today.<\/p>\n
The market takes place every Wednesday from about 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The center is Pla\u00e7a des Mercadal (Es Fossar) with its striking lion monument\u2014from there, the stalls stretch through the surrounding alleys and squares of the old town. Sineu was granted market rights as early as the Middle Ages; the Wednesday market is thus an institution that has evolved over centuries.<\/p>\n
Geographically, Sineu is located in the heart of Mallorca, about a 30-minute drive from Palma. If you want to avoid the hustle and bustle on the roads, take the train: The Palma\u2013Manacor line stops right in Sineu, and the train station is just a few minutes\u2019 walk from the market. If you\u2019re driving, there are designated parking areas on the outskirts of town, though they fill up quickly on Wednesday mornings\u2014so arriving early is definitely worth it.<\/p>\n
Sineu is at its best in the early morning, when the selection is at its largest and the atmosphere is still relaxed. Be sure to set aside time for a break: Sineu is famous for its quaint \u201ccellers\u201d\u2014former wine cellars that now serve hearty Mallorcan cuisine.
