This guide covers the whole process: when the exchange is mandatory, which documents you need, how to book an appointment at the DGT in Palma and what it costs \u2014 including the post-Brexit rules for <strong>UK licence holders<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2>Do I have to exchange my licence?<\/h2>\n<p>It depends on where your licence was issued and how long you have been a resident:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>EU\/EEA licences:<\/strong> valid in Spain. However, after <strong>two years of legal residence<\/strong> the Spanish renewal periods apply to you (normally every 10 years until age 65), which in practice means going through the DGT anyway \u2014 so many residents simply exchange.<\/li>\n<li><strong>United Kingdom:<\/strong> since the UK\u2013Spain agreement of March 2023, UK licences are exchanged <strong>without taking a test<\/strong>. As a resident, your UK licence is only valid for your first <strong>6 months<\/strong> of residence \u2014 after that you need the Spanish licence.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Other countries with an exchange agreement<\/strong> (Switzerland, Andorra, Japan, New Zealand, most of Latin America and others): same as the UK \u2014 exchange without a test, valid for 6 months after becoming resident.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Countries without an agreement<\/strong> (e.g. USA, Canada, Australia): your licence is valid for 6 months of residence; after that you must <strong>pass the Spanish theory and practical tests<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A bonus of the Spanish licence: you join the Spanish <strong>12-point system<\/strong>. With a foreign licence you have no points balance, which can complicate matters if you are fined.<\/p>\n<h2>Documents you need<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Application form<\/strong> (at the Jefatura or on sede.dgt.gob.es)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Passport + NIE\/TIE<\/strong> \u2014 don&#8217;t have one yet? Try again <strong>early in the morning between 8 and 9 am<\/strong>, when new appointments are released \u2014 or call <strong>060<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2>The DGT office in Palma<\/h2>\n<p>The exchange is handled by the <strong>Jefatura Provincial de Tr\u00e1fico de les Illes Balears<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Address:<\/strong> Carrer de Manuel Aza\u00f1a, 50, 07006 Palma<\/li>\n<li><strong>Opening hours:<\/strong> Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday, 8:30 am \u2013 2:30 pm<\/li>\n<li><strong>Phone:<\/strong> 971 465 262 (general information: 060)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You will not be seen without an appointment. Bring originals plus copies of everything.<\/p>\n<h2>Fees and costs (2026)<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>DGT fee (tasa 2.3, exchange without tests):<\/strong> 28.87 euros<\/li>\n<li><strong>Medical certificate (psicot\u00e9cnico):<\/strong> 25\u201350 euros depending on the centre<\/li>\n<li><strong>Passport photo:<\/strong> 5\u201310 euros<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>All in, a standard exchange costs around <strong>60\u201390 euros<\/strong>. Pay the fee online at sede.dgt.gob.es, in the miDGT app or at your appointment.<\/p>\n<h2>The process step by step<\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li>Book your <strong>cita previa<\/strong> online (see above)<\/li>\n<li>Do the <strong>psicot\u00e9cnico<\/strong> \u2014 the centre sends the result to the DGT electronically<\/li>\n<li>Pay the <strong>fee<\/strong> online or prepare to pay at the appointment<\/li>\n<li>Attend the <strong>Jefatura in Palma<\/strong> with all your documents<\/li>\n<li>The DGT <strong>keeps your original licence<\/strong> and issues a temporary driving authorisation<\/li>\n<li>Your Spanish licence arrives <strong>by post within 4\u20138 weeks<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2>Frequently asked questions<\/h2>\n<h3>Can I drive while the exchange is being processed?<\/h3>\n<p>Yes. The temporary authorisation the DGT gives you lets you keep driving in Spain until the new licence arrives.<\/p>\n<h3>Do I have to take a driving test?<\/h3>\n<p>Not with an EU\/EEA licence, and not with a licence from an agreement country \u2014 including the UK, Switzerland, Japan and most of Latin America. Without an agreement (USA, Canada, Australia), you will need to pass the Spanish theory and practical exams.<\/p>\n<h3>I&#8217;m British \u2014 what exactly changed after Brexit?<\/h3>\n<p>Since 16 March 2023 a bilateral agreement lets UK licence holders exchange without a test, restoring the pre-Brexit situation. If you become a resident, do it within your first 6 months \u2014 after that your UK licence is no longer valid for driving in Spain as a resident, though the exchange itself remains possible.<\/p>\n<h3>What happens to my old licence?<\/h3>\n<p>The DGT withdraws it and returns it to the issuing authority. You cannot keep both \u2014 one driver, one licence.<\/p>\n<h3>I&#8217;m only here on holiday \u2014 does this affect me?<\/h3>\n<p>No. Tourists can drive on an EU or UK licence without any time limit, and on other licences together with an International Driving Permit. The exchange only concerns residents.<\/p>\n<h3>Is there a digital licence?<\/h3>\n<p>Yes.
