The Empadronamiento is the registration of your address at the local town hall (Ayuntamiento). It is mandatory for everyone living in Spain and a prerequisite for residency, school enrolment and public healthcare access.

What is the Empadronamiento?

It is your entry in the Padrón Municipal, the municipal residents register. Without it, no access to public health, no school registration for children, and no residency application.

What do you need?

  • Passport or ID card
  • NIE number (recommended)
  • Rental contract or property deed
  • For rentals: landlord authorisation (some municipalities require this)
  • Completed form (available on site or online)

Where and how to register

Visit the Ayuntamiento of your municipality in person. In Palma, book a Cita Previa (appointment) online.

Processing time and cost

The Empadronamiento is free and usually issued immediately. You receive a Volante de Empadronamiento on the spot.

Important notes

  • If you move within Mallorca, you must re-register
  • It does not expire, but some authorities need a recent certificate (less than 3 months old)
  • All household members must register individually (including children)

Next step: Apply for residency
