Whether you are importing a car or buying one in Mallorca, it must be registered with Spanish plates. The process is bureaucratic but manageable.
Importing a car
Step 1: ITV inspection
The vehicle must pass a Spanish ITV (equivalent to MOT). You need your vehicle documents and COC (Certificate of Conformity).
Step 2: Taxes and fees
- Registration tax: Based on CO2 emissions (0-14.75%)
- IVTM: Annual vehicle tax, depends on HP and municipality (100-300 euros/year)
- ITV fee: approx. 40 euros
- Gestor fee: 200-400 euros (recommended)
Step 3: Registration at DGT
Submit all documents. You receive Spanish plates and the Permiso de Circulación.
Buying a car in Mallorca
- Purchase contract
- DGT report check (no debts, not stolen)
- Transfer tax (ITP): 4-8% of vehicle value
- Transfer at DGT
Use a Gestor?
Highly recommended. A Gestor handles all paperwork for 200-400 euros.
Deadlines
As a resident, you have 30 days to re-register your vehicle after obtaining residency.
