The TIE (Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero) is the physical identity card for foreigners in Spain. Since 2020 it replaces the green residence certificate for non-EU citizens. For EU citizens it is optional but useful.
Who needs the TIE?
- Non-EU citizens: Mandatory after receiving residence permit
- EU citizens: Optional – the green Certificado is sufficient but the TIE is more practical (credit card size)
- Non-EU family members of EU citizens: Mandatory
TIE vs NIE vs Certificado
- NIE: Just a number – no card, no residence right
- Certificado de Registro: Green A4 paper confirming EU residence right
- TIE: Plastic card with photo, biometric data and NIE number
What do you need?
- Form EX-17
- Passport + copy
- NIE documentation
- Empadronamiento
- Passport photo (white background, 32x26mm)
- Fee: approx. 12 euros

At the Oficina de Extranjería or Comisaría de Policía Nacional in Palma. Book a Cita Previa online.
Processing time
The card is produced in Madrid. Processing: 4-6 weeks.
