EU driving licences are valid in Spain. However, if you are a resident in Mallorca, you should consider exchanging your licence for a Spanish one – it becomes mandatory for renewal.

Do I need to exchange?

EU licences are technically valid, but the DGT recommends exchanging for permanent residents. With a Spanish licence you get 12 penalty points (vs. 0 with a foreign licence) and faster police checks.

What do you need?

  • Application at the Jefatura Provincial de Tráfico in Palma
  • Passport + NIE
  • Empadronamiento (current)
  • Medical certificate from a Centro de Reconocimiento – approx. 25-40 euros
  • Original licence
  • Passport photo
  • Fee: approx. 28 euros

Process

  1. Book a Cita Previa online at the DGT
  2. Get a medical certificate
  3. Attend appointment with all documents
  4. Your old licence is retained; you receive a provisional Spanish licence
  5. Final licence arrives by post (4-8 weeks)

Important

  • Your original licence is sent back to your home country
  • Motorcycle categories are transferred
  • DGT appointments book up weeks in advance
